[Unzan remains silent, and looms around with his grumpy old cloud face. He only speaks to Ichirin after all, no exceptions! For now, at least.
Ichirin takes her Compass out and passes it over. She may be nice and smiling, but a part of her is ready to launch an attack the second her device is threatened. It seems like an important piece of kit, after all.
But it really isn't anything personal, of course! At least she didn't just blurt out her intentions.]
What do we have to look out for? Just the monsters I heard in the hold, or something worse?
[Unzan's lack of response doesn't phase her--she's used to silent types--and she's soon working on the Compass, not thinking that Ichirin would attack her at all. She'd understand if it happened, of course, these things are important...but the thought doesn't cross her mind as she works.]
The monsters in the hold are the longer lasting threat, but there are other things. [she flicks her eyes upwards, then:] Our host isn't the most pleasant man, either. He's the larger threat, and no one's been able to find him on days he doesn't come out to greet the new arrivals.
[To her knowledge, at least. He may have been around with the chaos from yesterday, but hell if she was looking.]
[Ichirin goes through tiny, fleeting, phases of watching the woman across from her working. It's all too high tech for her. She doesn't even know what the phrase high tech means, for a start!
She's good at picking things up but there's a limit to these things. A limit that this compass tinkering had passed long ago.
She's not looking when Cortana mentions the man in charge, but she makes eye contact pretty quickly.]
...Our host? I don't know if I caught a glimpse of him. Did he greet my group when we arrived..?
Four weeks. I arrived on deck supposedly at the same time he did. [she pauses a second, rewriting a stubborn line of code] Or what he said made it seem that way, anyway. He called himself our new Project Head, but verifying that as truth has proven a bit difficult.
[Not that it matters, really.]
Although, to be entirely honest, you're better off if you don't see him. First time I noticed him, he drowned a woman without putting her in the water.
You'll have to trigger it manually, but it's easy. Here. [tilting the screen so they both can see it, she goes through the motions of two quick taps on certain options, but doesn't do it a third time.] Hitting this one sends out the signal and broadcasts your location to him. It'll shut off if you hit this one here.
[And another button is gestured to, just to be on the safe side.]
[She watches with interest, taking in as much information as she can. A few impressed noises are made, but it's not too obvious that she's forcing herself to do that out of politeness. As interesting as it is she's more thankful than impressed.
When the demonstration is over she smiles and bows her head politely.]
Thank you very much, but can I ask you one thing about this feature?
[Impressing someone wasn't the reason Cortana did it, but she'd be lying if she said those impressed noises didn't make her feel a little more useful around here.]
Generally, a life or death situation that you can't get yourself out of. [shrug.] It's a wide band distress call, really. Something that lets people know you need help even if you can't give out details at the time.
Action!
Over here.
[The pink cloud gets an odd look, a mix of curiosity and confusion, but Cortana doesn't seem scared at all. Seen worse, after all.]
Glad you made it.
Action!! forever
[Time to go sit down, or at least stand by a chair and wait for Cortana to sit down first.]
I'm glad you're glad, and I'm grateful for your help.

It's the least I can do, really. We have to look out for one another around here.

I wouldn't know. How long have you been here?

[She's wondering why Murasa never mentioned the guy... but maybe she just had too much on her mind.]
And you...?

[She gets a slight feeling of not wanting to know, but still. She has to ask.]
...He drowned someone? Who?
[More important than the why, for some reason.]
no subject
[The second question makes her pause, and she sighs.]
Her name was Palmer. She's not here anymore.
no subject
She's glad it wasn't Murasa, though. And that makes her feel a little bit guilty.]
...I'm sorry to hear that. Were you friends?
no subject
Colleagues, actually. We'd worked together for a time.
[Back on their world or here? Maybe both. She doesn't specify as she finishes her work on Ichirin's Compass and holds it towards the other woman.]
There. All set to broadcast an SOS to Chief if you get into trouble.

...It does it automatically? Or do I need to push something

Of course. What is it?

I'll use it wisely, then. Thank you for your help!
[Oh, and she adds...]
Ah, Unzan says thank you too.
no subject
You're both welcome. Give me a call if you need any help with that thing in the future.
[By thing she means the Compass, of course. Tech's kind of her thing.]

[But she pockets her Compass for now. She doesn't need it out here, does she?]
