CHARACTER NAME: Ichirin Kumoi (the hitbox) and Unzan (the cloud)
SERIES: Ichirin's information on the wiki. and Unzan's entry and the Touhou Wiki itself.
CANON POINT: Post UFO.
AGE: Over 1000 years old.
APPEARANCE: Ichirin in all her splendor ft Unzan. And Ichirin and Unzan in their original ZUN art glory.
PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: None!
PERSONALITY:
Ichirin: Her in game profile describes her as a straightforward, pleasant, tenacious quick thinking girl who finds it easy to understand things. These things are perhaps her greatest strengths aside from the fact that she can easily understand the human heart. She's a very caring person who takes others into consideration even if they disagree with her and even if she disagrees with them; she's just that nice. Though these strengths do have their downsides. Generally speaking Ichirin assumes the best in people if she doesn't know them. She lets the heroine on board the ship she's defending because she assumes they share the same goal (which they don't) and doesn't bother explaining or asking. Sure it turns out well for her, and for her group, but it could have went badly if she had misunderstood the intentions of her opponent. Though this does back up just how much she understands the heart of a human since taking a high risk while protecting the ship would've been careless and unlike her.
She had her quick thinking mind even when she was young; it's how she met her giant floating cloud partner. But there'll be more about that in Unzan's personality section since that's basically all of his personality and backstory. Ever.
Loyalty is another of Ichirin's strengths and is her whole reason for guarding the ship she protects in the first place. She wasn't asked to protect it she just does it because she wants to. She feels like she owes Byakuren Hijiri a debt for helping her and her companion long ago and so she'll do whatever she can to help the crew bring her back. There's nothing that can be done to persuade her not to, that's just how fierce her loyalty is.
Despite the fact that she's so loyal and kind and understanding the official material classifies Ichirin (and Unzan) as having a high threat level. This isn't unusual for a youkai. Not at all. What's unusual is that her 'friendship level' is classed as high as well. While the pair are dangerous they rarely attack anyone and spend the most of their time at the Myouren temple where Unzan does heavy lifting.
Ichirin thinks of herself as a useful part of the crew since she protected the ship while it flew through the sky. There's probably some part of her, though, that wishes she was stronger without Unzan's help and resents the fact that she needs to be combined with his power to be completely effective as a guard. It makes her feel weak, even if she feels guilty about those thoughts.*
From the outside people probably look at Ichirin as a cheerful buddhist nun type girl who thinks things through more a little more than her captain does. A little more than most people around her do, maybe. The phrase 'only sane man' wouldn't be too out of place if used on her, actually.
After joining up with Unzan when she was just a human child Ichirin's personality started to change almost instantly. She no longer had to fear youkai as she had a courageous and powerful protector who had sworn to protect her no matter what. Unfortunatley for her this lead to other humans fearing her for being followed by a monster and she lived a life full of ups and downs due to the treatment of other humans. Eventually, before she even noticed, she too had become a youkai. It was around this time that Byakuren Hijiri gained her trust by showing kindness to both Ichirin and Unzan and the two of them devoted themselves to her.
Ichirin's goals are simple. She wants to help Minamitsu Murasa's group of youkai (of which she's part of) free Byakuren. That's all. Then there's the little part about spreading faith. That's a goal she shares with Byakuren, too.
Her whole motivation for her goal is to repay Byakuren, to aid her friends. Being a buddhist is where most of her other motives come from, though, such as being nice and friendly and so on and so forth.
Unzan: a giant cloud that Ichirin met up with when she was just a little tyke. He used to be feared far and wide but now that he's paired up with Ichirin he rarely attacks anyone.
Well. As for how they teamed up. That was due to Ichirin's quick thinking nature. One day when the young girl was out picking flowers she came across a foreseeing-type nyuudou who was facing the ground. These beings were monks with faces so large that they only look at their feet, hiding their faces so that nobody can see how large their heads have grown. Once they look up, though, they decapitate their target. Ichirin's quick thinking allowed her to chant the saying to repel the creature - "The foreseeing nyuudou was foreseen!" - and this little girl's action shocked Unzan enough that instead of fading away like a normal nyuudou would he swore that he'd protect her with his life.
Unzan's loyalty is his greatest strength but he's a stubborn man which makes it easy for Ichirin to control him.
And he's so shy that Ichirin is the only person he speaks to, and even when he does he speaks so quietly that only she can hear him. She usually relays his words if she feels the need.
Even if he's not likely to attack these days other people still look at him with anxiety. He's still a nyuudou and still very dangerous.
ABILITIES:
Ichirin:
While Ichirin is a youkai and would normally have a long lifespan and a robust body (official canon material says if a youkai is split apart it'll heal right away) her official profile says she's similar to a magician youkai since her body was originally human. But since she doesn't have the behaviour, weaknesses and abilities of a magician it's likely that she does posses the strong body of a youkai.
Unzan: Most of Unzan's abilities are tied to Ichirin's. Her spell cards use him, for example. Her punching attacks generally use him and she can direct him to fire giant laser beams style danmaku from his eyes. Being a giant pink floating cloud, though, he naturally has abilities that Ichirin doesn't.
Ichirin and Unzan:
Since both of them are youkai Ichirin and Unzan are strong to average physical attacks. It's more obvious with Unzan since he's already a giant pink cloud, though. The drawback of this is that they are weak to spiritual attacks or attacks from spiritual items or legendary weapons. Even traditions can damage a youkai, but Ichirin and Unzan seem to have any weaknesses stemming from traditions like, for example, vampires do.
They do have the weaknesses to spiritual objects and people, though.
POSSESSIONS:
Ichirin has the clothes on her back and thesonic the hedgehog cosplay magical nun rings she carries around with her.
She's a good buddhist she doesn't need or have very much while Unzan doesn't have any possessions. He's a cloud.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[Ichirin opts to use an audio method to send out a message, if only so that she can investigate this place while she speaks. That does lead to the occasional conversational tangent, though, and cuts out the fact that she's accompanied by a sombre looking pink cloud the size of two tall men. If she heads inside then he'll have to shrink down, though. Or stretch out. She's going to leave the choice up to him; it's not his first time indoors.]
Greetings, if you are hearing this message then I'm glad I got things working. I've never seen a compass like this one, I actually thought it was a broken piece of junk at first! Unzan says it was probably important since I woke up with it, so I kept it around and I'm glad I did.
[Unzan's name is dropped in there casually, the idea of telling people about him doesn't cross her mind. Plus, she's got more important matters to attend to.]
Unzan also says that I'm probably not the first person to wake up here completely clueless, which is nice to think. So... could one of you other clueless people please speak up? I'm looking around the place and I haven't seen anyone who looks lost just yet.
--Oh, I almost forgot!
[Now she switches to videoand back to audio, then back to video by mistake to show her clean, smooth skinned, smiling face. It's a sharp contrast to the face Unzan is making, though. He looks bored, old, pink and scruffy. As scruffy as a cloud can be, anyway.
Ichirin bows her head before she starts finishing her message.]
My name is Ichirin and this is my partner in crime Unzan.
...What? [She turns her attention to the completely silent cloud, a curious look on her face while she listens, hmmms and nods a few times.] I see. Is that it? [Once again she turns her attention to the camera with an exasperatedand slightly embarrassed expression and bows.]
Unzan is right; I wasn't being sincere. It was an expression. I'm a good and honest girl, so please take care of me!
Also here is a link to Ichirin interacting with someone else. It shows her being slightly more serious.
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Ichirin slowly walked along the cold, grey corridor of the ship. What was it called again? The Charon? Whatever it was called it was nothing like the Palanquin back home. It was cold, it felt empty, it's walls were dirty and, though it wasn't a major concern, the lights weren't to Ichirin's liking. She shook her head, making a mental note to keep her eyes peeled for anything she could use to clean any walls that particularly needed a good scrubbing, and finally stopped dead in her tracks.
"This is the place..." she muttered to the pink mass of cloud behind her. She stayed put, letting her hand linger on the doorframe for a moment or two. She didn't want to be here, she didn't want to do this. It was a little creepy. "You're lucky you don't have any clothes to wash, Unzan."
And with no audible response from Unzan - but a fresh smile on her face - she made her way inside. Though almost instantly she wished she hadn't. The sight before her was not an inviting one. The room was cramped, dim and smelled weird. Like damp fabric clogging up the air and invading her nostrils. Ichirin was made of tough stuff, but that smell was just plain unpleasant. She covered her nose with one hand before she inspected the strange machinery inside the room. This stuff would wash her clothes, she had heard, but it looked like it was in dire need of being washed itself.
Maybe she'd do that later, since she couldn't even tell how to work these things properly. She took a few more steps around the room, breathing only through her mouth, and occasionally asked Unzan questions he wouldn't know the answer to.
"What's this?" about a dryer
"What's that?" about some washing machine parts on the floor
"How do you turn the washer device on?" about one of the several broken dryers.
Yes, after taking another look around she decided that it truly was an impressive feat that someone had managed to cram so much garbage into one small sliver of a room. Hopefully she could follow in their footsteps and figure out how to use some of this garbage, though. She really needed to wash her clothes before she started introducing herself to her new shipmates.
"Alright, let's get to work!" She cheered to Unzan, pulling her hood over her head and tossing it into a broken washing machine. "Watch the door and make sure nobody comes in, Unzan!"
It was going to be a long task. Hopefully someone would get past her cloudy guardian or she wouldn't be getting washed anytime soon.

ABILITIES:
Ichirin:
- She can fly, like most character from the touhou universe.
- She controls Unzan and uses him to fight. When she throws a punch he can mimic the same punch, etc etc.
- She uses her metal rings to control his attacks in melee combat but also uses them as brass knuckles.
- She throws her metal rings and has them come back to her like boomerangs. Only they actually come back unlike those ripoff boomerangs you get in real life.
- She can shoot large amounts of bullet patterns like other touhou characters. Danmaku all day every day.
- Most of her spellcards involve Unzan attacking because they're two parts of a team. Here are some of her cards. Here are some others (only the ones with Ichirin listed as their owner).
While Ichirin is a youkai and would normally have a long lifespan and a robust body (official canon material says if a youkai is split apart it'll heal right away) her official profile says she's similar to a magician youkai since her body was originally human. - He can change his shape, his size and can multiply his limbs.
- He can shoot bullets like other touhou characters.
- He can shoot his limbs like projectiles.
- But he can't change his colour (this is the reason given for why he can't become 'anything he likes' and that's tragic) which isn't a bad thing since pink suits him.
